Marketing Campaigns for Ministry

Churches can create a successful marketing campaign

Creating marketing campaigns aren’t complicated. For some reason, there’s a myth that marketing campaigns are only for large organizations, people who have big budgets and well-experienced marketers. Churches too can create eye-catchy content, digital product, & utilize marketing strategies.

Bernice is a woman of Faith, Business Coach, Marketing Campaign Specialist, and Author her newest book, "Marketing Campaign Handbook.". She has a Master’s and Bachelor’s in Business Administration and Management and serves as the overseer, visionary and designer for Loman Creative Services. She is Google Certified for mobile website design with several global partnerships with Walmart, Constant Contact, Amazon, & GoDaddy just to name a few. She enjoys serving ministries with her fun-filled webinars & workshop to teach branding, marketing & technology.

No Child Left Behind: Designing Ministry for Teens and Young Adults

The main takeaway of the presentation is to both inspire and assist church and community leaders in intentionally developing and including youth and young adults in their program design in order to protect and save them from the pangs of our current society.

When children reach their teen years they begin to exit church life because churches neglect to develop programming that specifically includes or addresses their needs.

The initial introduction of my presentation will include the imperative for Black Churches to be a safe place/space where youth desire to congregate, socialize and receive cultural and spiritual nourishment. This means tailoring worship services to allow youth to regularly participate e.g. Creating digital announcements, managing sound equipment, speak etc. during regular services.

Secondly, my presentation will emphasize the importance and necessity of financing youth and young adult ministry which should include creating line-items in the Church’s annual budget, as well as procuring grants. The funds will assist  in providing at least part-time staffing to manage daily operations of specific youth programming that includes outreach, program design birthed from the ideas and desires of youth, and volunteer recruitment.

The final segment of the presentation will include assisting churches in surveying their local demographic and the possibility of designing programs to meet the needs of a diverse population.

Currently celebrating forty-two years in ministry, Rev. Cheryl Denise Ward holds a Master of Arts Degree in Homiletics from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA, and is a candidate for a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.) in Pastoral Psychology with an emphasis in Leadership Studies, at the Graduate Theological Foundation in Oklahoma City, OK.

Rev. Ward has pastored several churches in the San Francisco Bay Area and has over three decades of experience working with inner-city, at-risk youth and college age young adults.

She is also the author of two non-fiction books and three fiction novels. Her fiction novels have served as a tool to reach young adults, as her characters and plots include contemporary issues that arise in Black Families and communities. She has been a featured author for two consecutive years at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, LA.

Rev. Ward’s sermons have been published in The Women of Color Study Bible,(Nia Publishing), Those Preaching Women, Vol. IV, by Ella Pearson Mitchell, and The Preaching Pulpit Journal (Judson Press). She has also served as a presenter at the Oxford Roundtable at Brasenove College at Oxford University, in Oxford England.

A minister in the United Church of Christ, she currently serves as a church and denominational consultant, as well as a national and international Guest Preacher, Teacher and Lecturer.

iHomiletic™: Preaching & Teaching that Clicks

Core values to keep in mind for doing ministry during the COVID-19 pandemic.     Serving as a NextGen Pastor for a decade at several congregations, I noticed a stark disconnection between the preaching moment and the reception of the message for Black millennial attendees. My observations prompted my desire to have research to support the “reconnecting” work that I found myself doing. As a result, in 2013, I embarked on an ethnographic research journey to examine the relationships between Black millennials, Black churches, technology, social media, preaching, and pop culture. I coined and trademarked the term, iHomiletic™ as a result of my completed research. iHomiletic™ is a method of preparing, embodying, executing, and following up on a sermon; it uses the language of the day, social media linguistics, to offer hope to millennials attempting to navigate the social ills of society through the use of the preached Gospel. It argues that a preacher must align her sermon development and implementation with that of Apple product marketing to resonate with Black millennials – sleek, compact, concise, user-friendly, and upgraded continuously. With the impact of COVID-19 and though my new experience as the Dean of Chapel at Wiley College, iHomiletic™ has become more than a method for reconnecting Black millennials to Black churches. It is a relevant paradigm that all faith leaders can employ with the new norm of preaching and teaching from/behind a digital sacred desk. This presentation provides insight for practitioners to become better mavens of the Gospel for the sake of Black millennials and all of their e-churchgoers.

The Rev. Dr. Dominique A. Robinson serves as the inaugural Dean of Chapel and Assistant Professor of Religion at Wiley College – “the home of the Great Debaters” – in Marshall, TX. Dr. Robinson earned a B.A. in Government and Psychology from Georgetown University; a Master of Divinity and a Master of Theology, both from Candler School of Theology of Emory University; and a Doctor of Ministry degree in Gospel and Culture from Columbia Theological Seminary. She is the founder of iHomiletic™, a groundbreaking homiletic that employs social media linguistics and technology as a methodology to reconnect millennials to the Church. She is continuing her education, earning another doctorate at Christian Theological Seminary in the world’s first African American Preaching and Sacred Rhetoric PhD program.

Dr. Robinson has preached the Gospel across the United States and abroad in Guyana, South America, Barbados, Haiti, and Trinidad and Tobago. It is her life's goal to fuse her doctrine, discipline, and testimony to be an effective advocate and ally for those who are marginalized.

Implications of COVID 19: A Hybrid Online/In-Person Flipped Church Model

This session will challenge pastors and leaders to reimagine the future of church. COVID-19 has highlighted the benefits and drawbacks of online church to parishioners around the world. These online experiences will continue to impact and influence how parishioners choose to connect with ministries in the future. Based on educational learning models, churches will likely begin to flip or function as a hybrid model that fuses the best parts of in-person fellowship and online learning. Attendees will leave understanding the Flipped Church model and practical applications of how it can be used in tandem with current practices. This model may be especially relevant for engaging Millennial, Gen-Z and non-local parishioners post COVID-19.

Lindsay earned her Ph.D from Penn State University in Learning, Design, and Technology. She earned a Master's of Science in Education from The Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor's of Science in Marketing from Penn State. Her research focuses on online learning communities with an emphasis in Christian religious spaces. Her dissertation research explored how Black millennial Christian women use online spaces to engage in their faith practices.

Sharise Wigfall,  M.Div., Co-Minister to Young Adults Greater, Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of NY

What We Talk'n? Reimagining the Praxis of Young Adult Ministry through a Pedagogy of Engagement

Engagement is a relational process NOT a religious practice

One significant contributor to low levels of engagement among young adults  is a perceived lack of relevancy. One option to consider when exploring alternative methods for engagement is the significance of the cultures that are shaping and influencing the lives of young adults. While young adult ministry is in no ways irrelevant, the methods which we’ve used in our practice are. This is not to suggest that nothing is working, but that the growing number of young adults disengaged within faith spaces suggest that we consider alternative methods.

I argue for a pedagogy of engagement that reclaims and resonates with youth adults. An experiential, radical, and innovative approach that invites leaders to meaningfully engage young adults in interpersonal relationships, rooted in the values of mutuality, dignity, and community. An approach that engage young adults and create a space for transformative learning and spiritual formation. This session will specifically highlight a pedagogy of engagement, its healthy integration within ministry programming and the ways it might serve as a framework essential to the increase and encouragement of young adult’s engagement in faith spaces and spiritual practices.

Sharise can be described by many as one who has been gifted by the grace of God to impact generations. She is recognized as a gifted communicator, practitioner and emerging scholar known for her unique, relevant, and innovative approach to both her professional and ministerial callings. She has built her career on a dual commitment to youth development and youth/young adult ministry. She serves as the Director of Student Support Services for a Charter High School and  co-minster to the young adult and college ministry at the Greater Allen AME Cathedral of NY. Her greatest desire is to see young people actualize their faith in their day to day lives and to live out their individual calls in society.

Sharise has developed a ministry concept that describes the standard of excellence: a standard that is apparent in her commitment not only to ministry but also to education. Sharise holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Monroe College, a Master of Divinity from Drew University, and a Master of Arts in Religious Education from New York Theological Seminary.
